Blankets, Burners and Brave Decisions: A Field Guide to Terrace Shisha Season

Let's be honest with each other for a moment. The British winter is not designed with the outdoor shisha enthusiast in mind. Between November and March, the terrace becomes a place where the committed gather, huddled like penguins with good taste in molasses.

But here's the thing — the cold-weather session, done properly, might actually be the superior experience. Fewer people, crisper air, and a cloud that hangs beautifully in the chill. You just need a strategy. Consider this your field guide.

Rule One: Respect the Heat Lamp

The patio heater is the unsung hero of the British night out, and it deserves better than being treated as decoration. The trick is positioning. A heat lamp works by warming you and everything near you — so sit within its radius, not beside it admiring from a distance. We've watched people park themselves three metres away from a perfectly good heater and then complain about the cold. Don't be that person. Angle your chair in. Lean in. This is a relationship, not a long-distance arrangement.

Rule Two: The Blanket Is Not Optional

We keep a stack of blankets behind the bar for a reason, and it's not interior design. A blanket over the legs transforms an outdoor session from endurance test to luxury. There's something deeply civilised about being wrapped up warm, smoke curling into the night air, feeling vaguely like royalty who's made some questionable lifestyle choices.

Take the blanket. Use the blanket. Thank us later.

Rule Three: Choose Flavours That Fight Back

Summer belongs to the light stuff — mint, watermelon, the refreshing crowd. Winter is different. Cold air mutes delicate flavours, so you want something with backbone.

Double apple is the classic cold-weather warrior, and it earns its reputation. Cinnamon and spiced blends come into their own when there's a chill — they read almost like dessert. Grape mint holds up well, and if you want to lean into the season, anything with a warming, darker profile beats the tropical options every time. Save the mango for July. It'll still be there.

Rule Four: Wind Is the Real Enemy

Temperature gets all the blame, but wind is what actually ruins an outdoor session. It pulls heat away, destabilises the coals, and sends your smoke somewhere you didn't ask it to go.

The solution is simple: sheltered seating. Covered sections, windbreaks, a spot tucked into a corner — these beat an exposed table even if it's technically milder elsewhere. When you book, ask for the covered area. We won't be offended. We'll be impressed by your judgement.

Rule Five: Order Something Hot to Hold

The drink matters as much as the hookah in winter. A proper mint tea — sweet, steaming, endlessly refillable — is the terrace's official cold-weather companion. Turkish coffee is for the serious and the caffeinated. And if you're eating, a warm dessert alongside the smoke is a combination that has no business working as well as it does.

The golden ratio: something hot in the hand, something smoky in the air, something warm on your legs. All three boxes ticked and you can sit outside comfortably in conditions that would send lesser patrons running indoors.

Rule Six: Dress Like You Mean It

This shouldn't need saying, but here we are. The terrace in January rewards the prepared. Proper coat, sensible layers, and — hear us out — a hat. You lose a shocking amount of heat through your head, and there's nothing stylish about shivering through a session you were genuinely looking forward to all week.

The Case for Winter Sessions

Here's our honest opinion: the winter terrace is underrated. There's a stillness to a cold night that summer never quite manages. The smoke rises differently. The conversation comes easier. The lounge feels like it belongs to the people who turned up.

Summer terrace season gets all the Instagram posts, sure. But the regulars — the ones who know — they're the ones under the heat lamps in February, blanket on, double apple loaded, mint tea steaming on the table.

The terrace doesn't close for winter. It just gets more exclusive.
